The army disrupted the protest of Sunamganj Medical College students demanding the immediate opening of a hospital and ward facilities by baton charging and dispersing their program.
On Sunday, April 20, the newly established medical college’s second batch of students staged a demonstration by blocking the Sunamganj-Sylhet road. The coordinators led this program.
This caused severe traffic congestion, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. Upon receiving the news, the army arrived at the scene and baton-charged to control the situation.
On-site reports revealed that from 10 AM, students blocked the Sylhet-Sunamganj road near Madanpur, using bamboo barricades and a banner reading, “Health reform underway, we regret the inconvenience,” stopping traffic completely.

When the army asked the students to withdraw their blockade, they engaged in arguments and demanded the removal of disparities in the health sector.
It was reported that the first batch of medical students did not participate in the protest. They suggested presenting demands logically instead of blocking the road, but the coordinators announced the program anyway.
Medical students claimed that during the altercation, army personnel baton-charged them, leaving several students injured.
Major Mezbaha Uddin told the media that the blockade was removed because it disrupted traffic. He added that the situation is now under control.
