Extremist Students Erase Bangabandhu’s Mural and Graffiti at Jahangirnagar University

Extremist students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have erased murals and graffiti of Bangladesh’s founding leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The incident occurred late Wednesday night, February 5, at around 11:15 p.m. The murals were located on the wall of the Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture, and the graffiti was on the Al-Beruni Hall wall.

Earlier, a procession led by extremist students marched from the Bot Tola area of the university to the institute, chanting slogans such as “Mujibism, down with it” and “Destroy the Awami League’s bastion.” Upon reaching the site, they demolished the remaining nameplate of Sheikh Hasina Hall.

Yahya Zisan, a radical leader of the Jahangirnagar Reform Movement, stated, “The fascist Sheikh Hasina is broadcasting live from India, trying to send a message that she plans to return. She has conspired against the country from abroad. We will not accept this conspiracy. We demand that Sheikh Hasina be brought back immediately to face trial for genocide and that a notification banning the Awami League be issued within a week.”

Nazmul Hasan, an extremist student from the Anthropology Department, said, “We do not want to preserve the memory of Mujib, around whom Sheikh Hasina built her fascist regime. This sends a message that anyone who tries to become a fascist like her will face the same fate.”

Mizanur Rahman, a joint convenor of the university’s chapter of Chhatra Dal, remarked, “We are erasing the symbols that Sheikh Hasina used to rob the Bangladeshi people of their rights. Even in exile, she continues to conspire to destabilize the country. We demand her immediate return and public trial.”
