Mob attacks journalist in Sitakunda, calling him an Awami League Dosor

In Sitakunda, a journalist worshipping at a temple was attacked by a mob of terrorists, calling him a friend of the Awami League, and was allegedly attacked by a group of terrorists affiliated with the local BNP and Jamaat-Shibir.

The journalist has been admitted to Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital in a seriously injured condition.

The incident took place in front of the Shyama Puja Mandap in the Railgate area of ​​Sitakunda Municipality at around 8:30 pm on Sunday, October 19.

The injured journalist, Liton Kumar Chowdhury (45), is the Sitakunda Upazila correspondent of the daily Janakantha and former general secretary of the Sitakunda Press Club. His home is in the Railgate area of ​​the municipality.

A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, shows local thugs surrounding Liton Kumar Chowdhury and beating him up. At the time, he was abused by the thugs, calling him an Awami League agent.

Police said that Liton Chowdhury was taken to the police station in a bloody state after the beating. Later, the police took him to the Upazila Health Complex and from there he was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Liton Chowdhury’s son Rakesh Chowdhury said that at night, his father was performing puja at the Shyama Puja pavilion next to his house. At that time, some youths came and started abusing him and attacked him. The attackers took away his father’s mobile phone and wallet. In the attack, his father suffered a serious head injury and suffered a lot of bleeding. He is currently undergoing treatment at Chamek Hospital.

Sitakunda Press Club President SM Forkan Abu said, “The incident of a mob attacking a journalist is condemnable. The attackers’ faces are clearly visible in the video footage. We demand their immediate arrest and bringing them to justice.”

General Secretary Qayyum Chowdhury said, “Asad forces captured journalist Liton Kumar Chowdhury from the Shyama Puja pavilion and beat him up, seriously injuring him. They also robbed him of his mobile phone and 45,000 taka in cash. We are demanding the arrest of Asad and other terrorists in his forces.”

Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mojibur Rahman said, “Some young men brought journalist Liton Chowdhury to the police station in a bloody state. There is no case against him at the police station. He has been sent to the hospital. The incident is being investigated.”
