16-Year-Old Madrasa Student Raped; Mosque Imam Flees After Incident Comes to Light

An imam has been accused of raping a 16-year-old madrasa student in Companiganj, Sylhet. The accused imam, Hafez Mufti Noman bin Rabbani (35), is reportedly in hiding after the incident came to light.

The victim student alleged that the incident took place at the Imam’s house in Batertol village of the upazila on Thursday night, November 5.

She said that she was taken home on the pretext of an invitation, made to sleep on a bed at night, and then raped. She alleged that she was also threatened with death if she told anyone about the matter.

The student later returned home and told his mother about the incident. His mother has demanded a fair investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for the accused.

Accused Noman is serving as the imam of a mosque and the headmaster of an Ebtedayi madrasa.

In this regard, the acting principal of the concerned educational institution said that they have received the complaint and action will be taken according to the rules.

Companyganj Police Station OC Mohammad Usman Gani said the matter is being investigated. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.
