Earthquake Risk in Bangladesh: Call for Caution and Preparedness

Following two powerful earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand, the Fire Service and Civil Defence has expressed concern about similar natural disasters occurring in Bangladesh. The earthquakes in Myanmar, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, have already claimed over 1,000 lives, with fears that the death toll may rise further. In light of these events, the agency has emphasized the urgent need for preparedness to tackle earthquake risks in Bangladesh.

In a press release issued on Saturday (March 29), the Fire Service identified Chittagong, Sylhet, Mymensingh, and Dhaka as high-risk earthquake zones. To raise public awareness and strengthen preparedness, the agency has put forward several recommendations. The release stated that constructing earthquake-resistant buildings in accordance with the *Bangladesh National Building Code-2020*, as well as renovating and reinforcing old and vulnerable structures, is critically important. Additionally, improving fire safety measures in high-rise and commercial buildings has been advised.

The Fire Service further highlighted the need to ensure the safety of gas, water, and electricity lines, conduct regular drills and awareness campaigns on earthquake preparedness, and prominently display emergency contact numbers (such as Fire Service, Police, and Hospitals). It also recommended keeping essential supplies—including flashlights, radios, dry food, clean water, and first aid kits—stocked at home, as these items can be lifesaving in post-earthquake survival situations.

The agency stressed the importance of volunteer training and collaboration with monitoring organizations.
