‘Save the country from darkness’: Sheikh Hasina calls for unity to protect nation in New Year message

Dhaka, January 1, 2026: Bangladesh Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has extended her New Year greetings to the countrymen and urged them to unite to “save the country from this journey of darkness.”

He described the current situation as a deep crisis, warning that the country faces economic collapse and disgrace in the international arena.

In this message posted on the official Awami League X (Twitter) handle, Sheikh Hasina said, “Dear countrymen, the mask and ugly face of those conspiring to destroy the country have already been exposed before the nation. You have seen how the illegal power grabbers have taken you hostage and pushed the country towards darkness with the addiction of limitless corruption, lies and personal interests.”

He further said that the country’s economy has collapsed due to insecurity and chaotic situation among foreign investors and donor agencies. The name of Bangladesh is now uttered with fear in the world, as a result, no country looks at Bangladesh and its people with respect.

He alleged that questions are also being raised about the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War and the country’s distinct identity.

Expressing confidence in the people, Sheikh Hasina said, “I firmly believe that the people of Bangladesh will not allow this ongoing suffering to continue. We will see its decisive results in the new year.”

He called on everyone to unite and pledge to protect the country in the New Year.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Babagabandhu, mentioned her long-held dream and said, “My deepest dream and lifelong aspiration is that this country of ours truly belongs to everyone, regardless of religion, caste, class, profession or ethnic identity.”

At the end of the message, he expressed his best wishes and said, “Dear countrymen, may peace return to our national life in 2026; may the life of every citizen shine with security and harmony—I extend my heartfelt greetings and congratulations to all of you.”

At the end of his greetings, he said, “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu. May the light of dawn come after darkness. Long live Bangladesh.”

This message comes amid a changing political situation following the July 2024 uprising, when Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule ended and preparations are underway for elections in February 2026.

Political pundits believe that this message will help boost the morale of Awami League supporters and shape public opinion against the current interim government.
