Amnesty International said that Sheikh Hasina’s trial and death sentence at the International Criminal Tribunal were in no way fair or just. The victims of July 2024 deserve much better justice.
Amnesty International said in a statement on the day the verdict was released, “Bangladesh needs a justice process that is highly impartial and beyond all doubt, free from any suspicion of bias and that does not lead to further human rights violations such as the death penalty. Only then will it be possible to provide real and meaningful truth, justice and reparations.”
The statement on Sheikh Hasina’s trial and verdict at the International Criminal Tribunal said, “The trial was conducted in a court that Amnesty International has long criticized for its lack of independence and long history of unfair trials. Furthermore, the unprecedented speed of the trial and verdict in the absence of the accused for a case of this magnitude and complexity raises serious fair trial concerns.”
Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard said,
“The demand for justice for victims and survivors is a rigorously independent and impartial process that fully complies with international human rights standards.”
