Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Sabuj Kumar Basak was attacked while trying to restore order in fuel oil distribution in Debiganj, Panchagarh. In the incident, an Ansar member assigned to his security was also beaten up and an attempt was made to snatch his official weapon. The injured Ansar member has been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
According to local sources, a long queue of motorcyclists was seen at Messrs. Jannatul Mawa Filling Station yesterday morning. However, many of the drivers in the line did not have the necessary documents such as fuel cards, registration and driving licenses as per government guidelines.
This caused problems for those with valid documents to get fuel and chaos ensued. Unable to handle the situation, the filling station authorities informed the UNO about the matter.
Upon receiving the information, UNO Sabuj Kumar Basak reached the spot at around 12:30 pm. He ordered the drivers without documents to move out of the line and fined two drivers Tk 500 each.
Then suddenly a procession of more than a hundred people came and attacked the UNO and those with him. At that time, an attempt was made to snatch the weapon of an Ansar member.
When the situation became heated, UNO took shelter in a nearby house with the help of locals. Later, Debiganj police arrived and rescued him safely and brought the situation under control.
UNO Sabuj Kumar Basak said the attack occurred when they were on the scene taking necessary action after receiving information about the deterioration of law and order.
Debiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Selim Malek said the situation is currently under control. The sale of oil at the filling station has been stopped until further notice and legal action will be taken after identifying those involved.
