Brahmanbaria: Even after the party’s activities were banned, the Awami League is sending a message to its leaders and activists to stay on the field through organized resistance. And not just to be beaten up – this time, the party is organizing active resistance to ensure the safety of its workers along with the quick procession.
One such incident took place at around 12:30 am on Thursday (May 14) in the Suhilpur Bazar area of the district headquarters. When leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League took out a quick procession on motorcycles in Suhilpur Union, BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists chased them. When they reached Malihata Shantinagar area of the neighboring Budhal Union, Awami League workers who were waiting in ambush resisted them. Five Chhatra Dal and Jamaat leaders and activists were injured in the incident.
The injured are: District Chhatra Dal joint convener Rahim Uddin, District Navin Dal joint convener Javed, Chhatra Dal activists Jasim, Shahinul Islam Shahin and District Jamaat propaganda department secretary and former district Chhatra Shibir president Md. Rokon Uddin. The injured have been treated at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.
Local sources said that BNP-Jamaat workers chased the Awami League’s Jhatika procession on motorcycles with the intention of attacking it. But the Awami League workers were ready this time. As they organized resistance, the attackers were forced to retreat after being injured. Party supporters believe that this incident proves that the Awami League is no longer just defending itself, but is moving towards active and organized resistance.
BNP leader and district council administrator Sirajul Islam, who visited the injured at the hospital on Friday morning, claimed that the Awami League was creating panic through sudden processions and carrying out pre-planned attacks. However, local Awami League sources rejected the allegations, saying that they were only putting up resistance to ensure their own safety and carry out their party programs.
Such incidents are making it clear that the Awami League is returning to its traditional militant spirit even in the face of repression. Party leaders and activists believe that this strategy of staying on the field while ensuring the safety of its workers will further strengthen the party’s foundation.
