An attack has been carried out at the residence of Jatiya Party Chairman and former opposition leader GM Quader in Uttara, the capital.
The attack took place at his private residence in Sector 7 of Uttara at around 10:45 am today, Monday, October 12. It has been confirmed that GM Quader was inside his residence at the time of the attack.
According to Jatiya Party workers, just before the incident, a protest procession of 150 to 200 people under the banner of ‘Common People’ came in front of GM Quader’s house. Local BNP, Jamaat and NCP leaders and activists were present in the procession.
The protesters continued to chant various offensive slogans against GM Quader and India. At one stage, a large number of bricks were hurled from the procession at GM Quader’s residence.
In multiple videos circulating on social media, protesters are seen throwing bricks and stones at GM Quader’s house while raising slogans of ‘Bharat’s brokers, beware’ and ‘Direct Action’.
The banner used by the attackers featured a portrait of GM Quader in prison. It carried harsh messages such as ‘Contact with fascist murderer Hasina; GM Quader’s arrest wanted’ and ‘Hasina’s address will not be in this Bengal’.
Jatiya Party Chairman’s Press Secretary Shaurya Deepta Surya confirmed the attack in a message sent at 11:49 am today and expressed deep concern.
He said, “At approximately 10:40 am, local BNP-Jamaat and NCP leaders and activists organized and attacked the JPA chairman’s house in Sector 7 of Uttara. We immediately informed the police about the matter and the police arrived at the scene.”
He also said that the Jatiya Party’s next steps regarding the emerging situation will be communicated to the media soon.
Meanwhile, Jatiya Party Barrister Shamim Haider has expressed strong protest and anger over the incident.
In a statement, he said, “Such political violence is unacceptable in any civilized and democratic society. The right to freedom of expression or political voice of any leader cannot be silenced by throwing bricks and stones or vandalizing houses.”
Citing tolerance and respect for the law as the foundation of democracy, he demanded a fair investigation into the incident and strict legal action against the culprits.
After receiving information about the incident, a team from Uttara West Police Station reached the spot and is trying to bring the situation under control. However, none of the attackers have been arrested yet.
