Bangladesh Chhatra League expresses deep shock, respect and sorrow at the passing of Toufique Imrose Khalidi, one of the pioneers of digital journalism and the editor-in-chief and publisher of the country’s first full-time online media outlet ‘bdnews24.com’.

Toufique Imrose Khalidi’s entire life was a bright and colorful story of the basic ideals of journalism, uncompromising integrity and professional excellence. After completing his studies from the English Department of Dhaka University, he left his mark of talent, wisdom and professionalism everywhere, from The Daily Star to international platforms like the world-famous BBC World Service. Later, upon returning to the country, he revolutionized the media world by going beyond the traditional channels and laying the foundation for modern and dynamic digital journalism.

In December 2017, he received the National ICT Award as a ‘special recognition and honor’ for developing ‘Digital Bangladesh’.

In the current context, when the freedom of the press is under threat from various invisible forces and the truth is being trampled under the blind temptation of a class of yellow journalism, the passing of a truth-seeker and an embodiment of morality like Toufiq Imroz Khalidi is an irreparable loss.

We are deeply concerned that a vested interest group is misleading society by resorting to yellow journalism and targeted propaganda to achieve personal or group interests. On the other hand, honest and ethical journalists are often subjected to various forms of unwanted interference and pressure while revealing the truth.

The standards of honesty and courage that Toufiq Imroz Khalidi set during his long career will be forever remembered in our national life. Bangladesh Chhatra League firmly believes that Toufiq Imroz Khalidi’s honesty, dedication and hardworking life will guide the coming generations in the fight against all unethical interference and yellow journalism for ages to come.
