Despite repression, the nationwide Awami League lockdown was successful with spontaneous public support

During the Yunus government, leaders and activists of the Awami League at all levels, even ordinary supporters, are being persecuted in various ways due to state oppression. Numerous party leaders and activists are in hiding, many have left their areas for fear of lawsuits. Numerous leaders and activists have been killed by mobs, crippled. Houses and businesses have been burned and looted. But morale could not be dented. Despite this situation, a lockdown program has been observed across the country on the call of the Awami League. The common people have spontaneously supported it.

Political analysts believe that the silent support of the common people has made the lockdown a success.

Since Thursday morning, November 13, the roads in various districts of the country including the capital have been almost empty. Public transport is limited, shops are closed and public gatherings were significantly less. Despite the terror attacks by the workers of various political parties supported by the state and the Yunus government across the country including the capital, the leaders and activists of the Awami League have observed the lockdown program.

The general public has obeyed the lockdown across the country, especially in North Bengal, South Bengal, and the Northeast. Various pictures and videos circulating on social media show people in different parts of the country planting trees, burning tires, and sitting on the streets to observe non-violent programs. They expressed solidarity with the leaders and activists of the Awami League’s affiliate organizations.

During this time, the police forces of various districts were seen to be silent and inactive. There was no rush for arrests among them.

Party leaders say that state terrorism has descended on them during the Yunus government. There are attempts to politically suppress party members through arrests, torture, and false cases. They are being killed. Houses are being burned. Courts are also being attacked. Despite this situation, the general public has stood by the oppressed.

Several top leaders of the Awami League said that the party was unable to make any organized preparations. Yet, they proved that they are against injustice by staying at home at the call of the country’s party.

Meanwhile, political analysts say the unprecedented public response to the lockdown indicates that anger against the Yunus government is quietly growing. They also believe that the Awami League, which has been a victim of oppression for a long time, is now gaining public sympathy.

The Awami League said that their program was to highlight the demands of the people through a peaceful mass movement, despite state repression.
