London, June 10, 2025: The chief adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has embarked on a four-day visit to the United Kingdom, where he is reportedly set to receive the so-called “King Charles Harmony Award 2025” conferred by King Charles III. However, this visit and the award have already sparked significant controversy.
The Bangladesh government has stated that Dr. Yunus traveled to the UK to receive this prestigious award, which recognizes his efforts in promoting peace, sustainable development, and an environmentally harmonious lifestyle. However, the list of awardees for 2025 announced on the King’s Foundation website in May does not include Dr. Yunus’s name, raising widespread questions on social media.
A visit to the King Charles Foundation’s website reveals that “The Commonwealth Association of Architects” has been listed as the international organization receiving the award for sustainable development. They are working simultaneously in nearly 17 Commonwealth countries to promote sustainable urban development.
Additionally, Dr. Yunus’s visit itself has faced criticism. Upon his arrival in the UK, no British government official welcomed him. Instead, officials from the Bangladesh embassy received him, indicating that this is not an official state visit at the invitation of the UK government. This marks Dr. Yunus’s 11th foreign trip, and critics claim that most of his visits have been personal in nature, despite being presented as state visits.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Awami League has expressed concern over the possibility of Dr. Yunus meeting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. They view this as an attempt to legitimize an “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional” administration. Furthermore, British MP Tulip Siddiq has requested a meeting with Dr. Yunus to seek clarification on corruption allegations against his administration, further complicating the political implications of this visit.
During this trip, Dr. Yunus will deliver a speech at a special event at Chatham House in London and hold courtesy meetings with the Secretary-Generals of the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organization. However, the absence of his name from the award list and the questions surrounding the nature of his visit have fueled further controversy.
Analysts believe that Dr. Yunus’s visit could play a significant role in strengthening Bangladesh-UK relations. However, the lack of transparency regarding the authenticity of the award and the nature of the visit has placed it at the center of debate.
