Police have arrested five Chhatra League activists in connection with the Awami League protest march in Feni. They were arrested from Birinchi, Alokdia and Bhalukia areas of the city on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Feni Police Station OC Gazi Foujul Azim said a case was filed against them under the Suppression of Terrorism Act and they were handed over to the court on Thursday afternoon. The families of the arrested people claim that the police have arrested the youths without filing a case.

It is learnt that on the morning of Wednesday, June 17, more than fifty youths took out a procession under the banner of Sadar Upazila Awami League on Station Road in Feni town. The matter came to the attention of the administration when a video clip of the procession went viral on social media Facebook in the afternoon.

In a video circulating on Facebook, a group of young people carrying a banner with pictures of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina and former Feni-1 MP Alauddin Chowdhury Nasim were seen chanting slogans in favor of the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina in a procession.

The procession, which started from Station Road, ended at the platform of the nearby railway station. Police conducted raids in the surrounding areas that night and the next morning and arrested five people suspected of participating in the procession.

The arrested are Jamiul Islam (20), son of Harun Ur Rashid of Sahadebpur village in the city, Ishtiaq Mahmud (19), son of Ilias Chowdhury of Alokdia village, Tasfirul Islam (19), son of Abu Jafar, Iftekhar Ahmed (19), son of Idris Bhuyan of Bhalukia village, and Saimun Chowdhury, son of Milan Chowdhury of Birinchi village.

However, their families claim that none of them hold any positions in the Chhatra League. They do not know who organized the procession.

Confirming the matter, the OC of Feni Model Police Station said that five people have been arrested and handed over to the court in connection with the procession. The operation to arrest the others is ongoing.
