Police have arrested five people, including a volunteer group leader, on charges of stealing a rural electricity transformer in Madarganj, Jamalpur.
The accused were sent to jail by the court today, Tuesday, September 15th, at noon.
Earlier, on Monday night, September 14, they were arrested in various areas of the upazila. During this time, the police also seized the tools used in the theft from them.
The five arrested are – Abinur, Selim, Sumon and Sumon alias Nuru Mia, residents of Nadagari area of Balijuri union of the upazila. The other accused is Russell Mia, a resident of Gabergram area and general secretary of Ward No. 3 Volunteer Party of Madarganj Municipality.
Police and locals said that in the last two months, more than 26 electrical transformers have been stolen in different unions of Madarganj, causing extreme suffering to ordinary consumers and farmers.
When the Madarganj Rural Electricity Zonal Office filed a complaint with the police station regarding these incidents, the police investigated and identified the gang.
Abdullah Al Mamun, convener of the Madarganj Municipal Volunteer Party, said the organization will not bear responsibility for the misdeeds of any individual. If the investigation proves the crime, strict organizational action will be taken against him immediately.
Madarganj Model Police Station OC Snehashish Roy said, “Several theft tools were recovered from the accused during the initial interrogation. The accused have been sent to court and a seven-day remand application has been filed to find out the main masterminds of this theft ring. All those involved in the crime will be brought to justice.”
