The scene in front of a CNG station on the main road in Sheorapara under Kafrul police station in the capital is no longer the same as it was ten ordinary days ago. As drivers emerge from the gas pump after standing in line for hours, their faces are filled with intense frustration and anger instead of relief.
Due to the severe gas shortage, CNG-powered autorickshaw drivers are not getting the fuel they need due to the lack of desired pressure.
When driver Azam Khan, after standing in the scorching sun for an hour and a half, found only 29 taka of gas in the cylinder, it felt like the sky had fallen on his head.
His dream of driving his car all day long with a daily gas bill of 380 taka and living comfortably with his family was shattered by a gas bill of just 29 taka. He had no choice but to return home empty-handed after depositing his car.
The same sad picture is also in the case of Abdul Jabbar, the sole breadwinner of the family. After waiting in line for 1.5 hours, he got only 53 taka of gas.
Rafiqul, who was struggling to meet all the expenses of his two children’s education and a family of four, wondered how he would be able to take a passenger to his destination with this little gas. Frustrated, he was finally forced to head home.
Another driver, Swapan Das, stood in line for an hour and a half, hoping for 300-400 taka of fuel, but got 81 taka of gas and sat down with his head in his hands. Surviving with his family in Dhaka city has now become a big challenge for him.
Due to the lack of gas pressure at the stations, countless drivers are returning home empty-handed or almost empty-handed every day, wasting their time and effort. This pathetic state of the transport sector has put the livelihoods of these low-income working people of the country at extreme risk.
If this crisis is not resolved quickly, the drivers’ livelihood is about to be completely cut off.
