Many customers are becoming confused after receiving unusually long 220-digit tokens while recharging their prepaid electricity meters. However, the electricity distribution company, the Northern Electricity Supply PLC (NESCO), has stated that this is neither an error nor an abnormal occurrence, but rather a completely normal process.
Why Is the Token So Long?
According to NESCO, residential prepaid electricity meters calculate electricity bills using six tariff slabs. Following the government’s latest decision to increase electricity prices, the per-unit rate in almost every slab has changed.
To implement the new tariff structure in prepaid meters, customers are being sent an additional token along with their regular recharge token. The combination of these two tokens increases the total length to as much as 220 digits.
In an official statement, NESCO clarified that receiving such a long token does not indicate any problem with the meter. It is a standard procedure used to update the new electricity tariff.
How to Enter the Token
The 220-digit token sent via SMS or the relevant portal is divided into segments of 20 digits each, separated by commas.
Customers should enter the first 20-digit segment into the meter and then press the green button or “Enter.”
The subsequent 20-digit segments should then be entered one by one in the same manner.
Once all segments have been entered successfully, the balance will be added to the meter and the new electricity tariff will automatically take effect.
Special Warning: Beware of Fraudsters
Recently, reports have emerged of fraudulent groups operating on Facebook and other platforms that target customers seeking assistance with the 220-digit token issue.
These scammers claim they can shorten or rearrange the token and then send fraudulent links to victims. According to complaints, the links are being used to hack social media accounts, banking accounts, and financial transaction applications.
Law enforcement agencies have urged the public to remain cautious regarding such fraud schemes.
Customers have been advised not to share meter information or personal information with untrusted individuals.
Where to Seek Help
If customers encounter any difficulties while entering the token, they may contact their nearest electricity office directly.
In addition, assistance can be obtained by calling the relevant customer complaint center.
