A man was killed by a private car after being hit by an employee at the Karim Filling Station in the Goalanda More area of Rajbari Sadar Upazila after he tried to leave without paying for fuel.

The deceased was identified as Ripon Saha (30), son of Pavitra Saha of Char Khankhanapur village in Khankhanapur union. He was working as a meterman/employee at a pump.

The station staff alleged that on Friday, January 6, at around 4:30 am, accused Abul Hashem Sujan (55) came in his jeep (black Land Cruiser; Dhaka Metro GH-13-3476) and took five thousand taka of fuel. When he tried to leave without paying, Ripon stopped him by going in front of the car. At that moment, the car ran over him and drove away.

The seriously injured Ripon was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

In this incident, the police quickly conducted a raid and arrested the car owner Abul Hashem Sujan (former treasurer of Rajbari district BNP and former president of the district Jubo Dal) and the driver Kamal Hossain Sardar. The car has also been seized.

Witnesses and pump workers said that the accused wanted to leave without paying, showing off their power.

This incident raises questions about the efforts being made by the Jubo Dal, the Volunteer Dal, or the Nationalist Dal, under the leadership of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, to build a benign and reform-oriented image.

Allegations of extortion, usurpation and violence are repeatedly being raised among the party’s leaders and activists, which many believe is revealing the true nature of the party. Politically aware people who have seen BNP rule believe that the character of BNP, which was out of power for 17 years due to misrule, has not changed, but rather has increased.

In recent similar incidents, Jubo Dal-affiliated leaders and activists have been accused of attacks and murders for refusing to pay extortion. For example, a businessman was stoned to death in Dhaka’s Chawkbazar for refusing to pay extortion, an attack on a human chain protesting extortion in Karwan Bazar, and incidents of occupation and extortion have occurred in various districts. Although Tarique Rahman himself has spoken of taking organizational action against thousands of leaders and activists on charges of corruption, extortion and misconduct within the party, such incidents are creating a crisis in the party’s image.

The family of the deceased Ripon Saha is preparing to file a murder case. There has been intense anger and condemnation among the local people. The police investigation is underway.
