Regrets the attempt to erase the memory and history of his father in the demolition of house number 32; Reluctant to lose respect and trust in the common people even if the return of people’s love is betrayal

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has mentioned love, respect and trust for people as her family teachings. In her words, politics is not for gaining power, but for serving people. If someone betrays someone while doing politics, it is their own weakness; there is no reason to move away from the place of love and respect for people.
Sheikh Hasina made these remarks in response to journalist Sultana Rahman’s question about the bulldozing of the historic house at number 32 in Dhanmondi and the attempt to erase memories.
While reminiscing about house number 32, he said that he and his sister Sheikh Rehana inherited the house. But they turned it into a public house by setting it up as a trust.
Sheikh Hasina said,
“It was from this house that the Father of the Nation declared independence, it was here that the 1971 heroines were rehabilitated, and it was here that my parents and brothers were killed. Why did they set it on fire and bulldoze it?”
He said, “Although it is possible to demolish buildings, it is not possible to erase history and memories. Despite all the hardships, he has fulfilled his father’s dream and worked to move Bangladesh forward.”
On the other hand, in response to a journalist’s sentiments about whether Bangabandhu should be punished for expressing excessive trust and love to ordinary people, Sheikh Hasina said that it is their family education to love and respect people.
Recalling his childhood, he said that from a young age, his father taught him to address rickshaw pullers and drivers as ‘apani’ and to respect domestic workers.
Sheikh Hasina said,
“If someone is dishonest while doing politics, it is their weakness. Even though it is difficult, I believe that politics is not for power, but for serving the people.”
His statement reveals that despite experiencing various hardships and betrayals in his personal and political life, he wants to see love, respect, and trust for the common man as part of his family values. For him, the main purpose of politics is not power, but service to the people.
