An Imam of a mosque in Bakerganj, Barisal, has been accused of living with another man’s wife for about seven months without being married. Local people and relatives of the Imam’s first wife detained him along with the woman.

Later, the police went to the spot and rescued the two. Since no one had filed any complaint, they were released on bail and given to their respective families.

The incident took place in Darial Union of Bakerganj Upazila on Wednesday.

The accused imam is named Abdullah Tuhin. He is the son of Abdul Kashem of Mostafapur village of Nilganj union in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali. He was serving as an imam at Banglabazar Jame Mosque in Darial union.

According to local sources, Tuhin married a woman from a neighboring village about five years ago. It is alleged that while leading the prayer at a mosque in Majidpur village of Patuakhali, he developed an intimate relationship with a married woman from the house next door to the mosque.

Locals claim that the woman once left her husband and family and moved in with Tuhin. They came to live in Darial Union of Bakerganj about seven months ago.

Local sources said that after taking over as the imam at Banglabazar Jame Mosque there, Tuhin rented a house next to the mosque. He was living in that house with the woman.

When the matter came to light, local people and relatives of Tuhin’s first wife detained the imam and the woman. Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot and rescued them.

Bakerganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Adil Hossain said, “After receiving the information, the police went to the spot and rescued the two. Since no one filed any complaint against them, they were handed over to their respective families on bail.”
