Schoolteacher Targeted and Arrested by an NCP Mob for Posting About Load-Shedding and the Fuel Crisis

Despite repeated promises to preserve freedom of speech and civil rights in the ‘new Bangladesh’, the reality on the ground does not bear this out. Recent developments have revealed the opposite picture, which has given rise to intense dissatisfaction among the common people.

Police have arrested Md. Rakibul Islam Mamun, an assistant teacher at Jaduboyara Secondary School, for recently posting a video on social media platform Facebook depicting public suffering.

He is the former joint general secretary of Kumarkhali Upazila Swechchhasebak League. Since the political upheaval of August 5, he has been active on social media, making him a target for terrorists from NCP, Jamaat-Shibir, and BNP.

In a recent video, he highlighted the suffering of the common people due to the ongoing electricity load shedding, energy crisis, and deteriorating law and order situation across the country.

The teacher was booked and detained after exposing the true nature of the daily lives of citizens. This move was taken to satisfy complaints from family and local residents, silence their voices, and pursue political revenge.

Local NCP leaders and activists submitted a written complaint to the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Upazila Secondary Education Officer on Tuesday afternoon, accusing the teacher of creating content that violates ethics and morals.

Upazila NCP member secretary Alamin Hossain Akash confirmed the authenticity of this information.

Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jamal Uddin said that Mamun has been arrested in a case related to August 5. In addition, interrogation is underway regarding the content creation allegations against him. Detailed information will be provided after the investigation is completed.

The arrest of a school teacher has sparked outrage among teachers, students, and the general public, with many believing it is a direct attack on free thought.

There have been strong demands from all quarters for the immediate unconditional release of assistant teacher Md. Rakibul Alam Mamun and the withdrawal of the baseless case.
