There is no security threat to Sheikh Hasina’s life, Delhi’s intelligence agency confirms

New Delhi: Recent reports circulating in some media outlets and social media have claimed that the life of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is in India, is under threat. However, security sources are skeptical of these claims and consider them exaggerated.

Sources familiar with Indian security agencies said they do not support the panic being spread by some reports. Rather, the prevailing view at the government level is that there is no credible or specific threat against Sheikh Hasina that would be a cause for particular concern.

Sources also said that Sheikh Hasina is under a strong security cover and is being accorded due status as an honoured guest of the Indian state. The idea that a radical opposition figure could target a former head of government by penetrating India’s security apparatus is considered exaggerated.

Such reports have given rise to speculation due to the ongoing politics of revenge and hatred against Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh and the unstable political situation after her departure. However, Indian agencies have realised that there is no immediate intelligence of any operational conspiracy against her on Indian soil.

The sources also dismissed the conspiracy claim involving a Bangladeshi national, Md. Zubayd Jim. They described it as false and exaggerated to spread sensitization. It is worth noting that the New Delhi Post also published a similar report written by a Dhaka-based writer. Later, when asked for evidence, the newspaper failed to provide sufficient evidence. The New Delhi Post sincerely regrets this.

This denial of the security threat also has symbolic significance. By saying that Sheikh Hasina is safe and secure in India, New Delhi is both expressing confidence in its security arrangements and reinforcing the message that a former neighboring head of state under their protection is completely safe.

While there is currently some speculation, sources say India does not perceive any imminent danger to Sheikh Hasina’s life. This stance is believed to reflect the professionalism of the security agencies and a realistic assessment of the situation.
