A group of Dhaka-based club organizers and councilors on Saturday demanded the cancellation of the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) board elections, warning that they would boycott future domestic leagues if their demands were not met by Sunday.
Officials representing about 43 of the 76 clubs, most of which are considered to be the top clubs in the country, made the announcement at a press conference held at the Mohammedan Sporting Club premises. They also demanded a new schedule for the BCB elections, which are currently scheduled to be held on October 6.
Leading club organizers Rafiqul Islam Babu, Lutfar Rahman Badal and Masuduzzaman spoke at the briefing, while Iftekhar Rahman Mithu and Khaled Mahmud, among others, were present.
The organizers have proposed three possible steps to resolve the ongoing dispute: extending the term of the current BCB board to facilitate a proper election process, holding the elections under an ad hoc committee, or canceling the existing schedule and directing the Election Commission or a newly formed commission to immediately announce a new schedule that will ensure the participation of all stakeholders.
At the same press conference, the organizers also expressed their intention to file a legal challenge against the High Court ruling that revoked the councilorships and voting rights of 15 controversial clubs ahead of the upcoming elections.
