Youth arrested for Facebook post about Tarique Rahman

Local Jubo Dal leaders and activists arrested a young man named Shaon Mahmud (35) in Srinagar, Munshiganj, and handed him over to the police on charges of making objectionable and abusive comments about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Facebook.

He was arrested by locals from Jushurgaon area of ​​the upazila on Thursday (April 2) afternoon. Upon receiving the information, the police went to the spot and brought him to the police station. Later, the police arrested him under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The arrested Shaon Mahmud is a resident of the Jawa Mandal area of ​​Radhikhal Union in Srinagar Upazila and is the son of Md. Shahidul Islam.

According to local and eyewitness sources, Shaon Mahmud recently posted a controversial post about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on his Facebook ID. After the matter came to light, there was intense anger among the leaders and activists of the local BNP and its affiliated organizations.

Around 2 pm on Thursday, 25-30 activists gathered at a restaurant owned by Shaon in the Jushurgaon M Rahman Complex area. They later detained him and informed the police.

Ujjwal Khan, a local Jubo Dal activist present at the spot, told reporters, “Shaon posted in foul language about the current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. After learning about the matter, we arrested him and handed him over to the police. Such audacity against the beloved leader of crores of people of the country cannot be accepted.”

In this regard, Srinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Mia said, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists arrested the young man and handed him over to the police. At that time, when a somewhat tense situation arose in the area, the police quickly went to the spot and brought the situation under control. A review of the arrested young man’s Facebook profile found evidence of various anti-government and anti-state posts.

He added that the process of filing a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act in this incident is underway and other legal steps are being taken.
