Zimbabwe Reach Super Eight at World Cup; Australia Eliminated

Zimbabwe became the last team to qualify for the Super Eights after their match against Ireland in Kandy on Tuesday was abandoned.

Zimbabwe qualified as the second team from Group B, meaning Australia are now out of the running for the next stage. Zimbabwe’s points from three matches after sharing points with Ireland today stand at five. Australia, on the other hand, have only two points. Even if they win their final group match against Oman on Friday, they will not be able to touch Sikandar Raja’s team’s points.

This is the first time in the history of the T20 World Cup that Zimbabwe has advanced to the Super Eights or second round.

Meanwhile, 2021 champions Australia were eliminated from the group stage of the tournament for only the second time. They were previously eliminated at the same stage in 2009.
