Child Raped After Being Trapped, Rescued from Rice Drum

Police in Khulna have arrested a young man named Mamun for allegedly raping a third-grade student.

According to police, on the evening of May 14 (Wednesday), the child was sent from a local shop to deliver tea and bread to Mamun’s house in the Notun Bazar area of the city. After entering Mamun’s house with the items, the child went missing.

After failing to find her, the child’s mother went to Mamun’s house based on information from the tea seller. There, she heard her daughter crying out “Ma!” (Mother) from inside the house. The child was eventually found hidden inside a rice storage drum.

Locals claim that after raping the child, the perpetrator intended to kill her—which is why he hid her in the drum. They allege Mamun likely planned to secretly dispose of the body later. Residents are demanding strict punishment for the accused.

On Thursday, May 15, the victim’s mother filed a case against Mamun at Khulna Sadar Police Station. He was arrested that afternoon and later sent to jail through court proceedings.

Khulna Sadar Police Station’s Acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sanwar Hossain Masum said Metropolitan Magistrate Sumaiya Kawsar recorded the victim’s statement before the accused was sent to prison.

The child has been admitted to the ICU of Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment, the OC confirmed.
