BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas claimed that Tk 90,000 crore was laundered from the country during the last eight months of the interim government.

He stated that individuals within the current government are involved in extortion, asserting that no extortionists remain in the BNP.

Mirza Abbas made these remarks on Thursday afternoon during the divisional BNP’s membership form distribution event at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Cumilla city.

He added, “Previously, BNP’s rival was the Awami League. Now we have many enemies, but we don’t care about them.”

Addressing party activists, Abbas said, “Some think it’s a good time for the BNP now. But this is not our good time yet. Our party is not in power; Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is still abroad. Therefore, no one should engage in any activities that tarnish the party’s image.”

He responded to questions about Tarique Rahman’s absence, saying, “Tarique Rahman will return to the country at the right time. Remember, our leader Ziaur Rahman was assassinated. Tarique Rahman must proceed cautiously. Even from abroad, he has strengthened the BNP significantly.”

Abbas urged vigilance against those misusing the BNP’s name for extortion and illegal activities, saying, “Our leaders and activists must remain alert. No extortion or land-grabbing in the party’s name should be tolerated. Such individuals must be handed over to the law.”

He further criticized the current government, claiming that the media cannot speak the truth under its rule and only praises the government.

Other speakers at the event included Cumilla Divisional BNP Organizational Secretary Principal Mohammad Selim Bhuiyan, Joint Organizational Secretary Mostak Mia, BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Amin-Ur Rashid Yasin, Cumilla South District BNP Convener Zakaria Taher Sumon, Member Secretary Ashiqur Rahman Mahmud Wasim, Metropolitan BNP President Utbatul Bari Abu, and General Secretary Yusuf Molla Tipu.
