Deception in Updating Voter Information

The ongoing voter list update process of the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) for the seventh time has been met with widespread criticism and complaints. Although the process, which began on January 20, claims to collect information from house to house, in reality, no such initiative has been visible in many areas, especially in the char areas and remote rural areas. As a result, millions of citizens are at risk of being excluded from the voter list. Due to this negligence and inefficiency, the publication of the final list is still delayed even after 8 months, which raises serious questions about the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.

The Election Commission claims that the project, which is being conducted under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, has collected information from house to house across the country. It is also reported that laptops, scanners and bags have been provided with the help of UNDP to add new voters and correct old information. But allegations at the local level and on social media have revealed a different picture. Apart from urban areas, no activity has been seen in rural and remote areas by data collectors. Especially the residents of char areas, who live in geographically vulnerable areas, have been completely deprived of this activity.

A resident of Char complained, “Year after year we have been deprived of our voting rights. This time too, no one has come to collect our information, while the EC says the work is finished. This is a clear scam!” Similar allegations have been spread on social media. One post said, “The EC’s claim of collecting information from house to house is completely false. No representative has come to our area.”

According to the EC’s plan, the door-to-door data collection was supposed to be completed in February. But time passed without any significant progress till August. Although the draft list published in August showed the number of voters at 126.1 million, it left out numerous names from the char areas and remote areas.

This situation has complicated preparations for the upcoming 2026 parliamentary elections. The uncertainty over the voter list has created unrest among political parties. Opposition parties, including the BNP, have questioned whether this inefficiency is intentional. A political analyst said, “This negligence by the EC is not only undermining the rights of voters, but is also damaging the very foundation of democracy. If people in the Char region cannot vote, then where is the transparency and impartiality of the elections?”

This error and negligence in updating the voter list seriously questions the credibility of the Election Commission. The EC should immediately launch a special campaign to ensure the voting rights of citizens, especially in the pastoral and remote areas. Without transparent and effective measures, this process will only be considered a fraud, which will further weaken the democratic process of the country.

The Election Commission should urgently address this issue and ensure the right to vote for all citizens. Otherwise, there will be renewed debate about the impartiality and acceptability of the upcoming elections.
