Gonojagoron Moncho Organizer Detained Following Jamaat’s Demand for Seeking War Criminals’ Trial

Abul Kalam Azad, a local organizer of the Ganajagaran Mancha, was arrested while trying to renew his weapon license in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. Police detained him following demands from local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists.

Bhaluka Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Humayun Kabir said Abul Kalam Azad was arrested in a ‘political case’. He was not named in the case, but was arrested on charges of involvement as an unknown accused, he said.

Local media workers said that on Thursday afternoon, Azad went to Bhaluka Model Police Station to renew his pistol license. At that time, local Jamaat leaders and activists gathered at the police station and demanded his arrest. Later, the police detained him.

They also said that Abul Kalam Azad has been associated with leftist politics for a long time and was a local organizer of the Ganajagaran Mancha, which was formed to demand the trial of war criminals.

When asked about the arrests at the request of Jamaat, OC Humayun Kabir said, “Someone or the other helps by providing information.”

Saifullah Pathan, Amir of Bhaluka Upazila Jamaat, said, “He gave a speech on television during the Ganajagran Mancha, was associated with the Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee. Because of them, the person who was sentenced to life imprisonment was sentenced to death. Therefore, we have demanded his arrest.”
