One of the two floating LNG terminals in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, will be closed for four consecutive days starting November 4. Due to urgent maintenance work, the supply of gas from LNG to the national grid will be reduced by 320 million cubic feet per day during this period. This could lead to low gas pressure across the country.

Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla) announced this information on Sunday. In a press release, the company said that gas supply to the floating LNG terminal at Summit will be suspended from 8 am on November 4 to 4 pm on November 7.

According to Petrobangla, the combined gas conversion capacity of the two floating terminals in Maheshkhali is 1.05 billion cubic feet per day. Currently, 920 million cubic feet of gas is being supplied to the national grid from the two terminals. With the closure of the Summit terminal, this supply will drop to 600 million cubic feet.

The current daily gas demand in the country is about 3.8 billion cubic feet. Against this, 2.52 billion cubic feet are being supplied. Of this, 1.6 billion cubic feet are coming from the domestic sector, and the rest from LNG. As a result, if the supply from the terminal is stopped, the gas crisis in the power, industrial and residential sectors may become more acute.

Petrobangla has expressed its apologies to its customers for this temporary inconvenience.

It is worth noting that earlier in December last year, supply was temporarily suspended for maintenance at the same terminal.
