Another name in the list of mysterious deaths in Rooppur: Body of interpreter recovered

The death of an interpreter working at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project in Ishwardi, Pabna, has once again cast a shadow of mystery. Police recovered his body from a rented house in Diyar Sahapur area of ​​Sahapur union of the upazila around 11:30 pm on Saturday. The incident has further intensified the suspicions and questions surrounding the project.

The deceased has been identified as Anwar Ahmed (52), a permanent resident of East Nasirabad area of ​​Chittagong. He had been living in a rented house in Ishwardi for the past one year and was working as a Russian language interpreter for a Russian company, Nikim. Ishwardi Police Station OC Shahidul Islam said, “The body was recovered from the rented house.

“No suspicious signs were initially found. The body has been sent to Pabna Medical College Hospital for autopsy to determine the cause of death.” This death has been linked to several mysterious deaths that have occurred in Rooppur in recent years.

It is noted that at least 25 Russian workers working on the project have died since 2017, including five in 2025. The causes of these deaths have been attributed to heart attacks, suicide, brain strokes, stress, and environmental and cultural incompatibility. However, in some cases, allegations of international conspiracy have also been made, although this has not been proven.

Locals and other project workers have expressed shock and concern over Anwar Ahmed’s death. A project worker, who did not want to be named, said, “The work pressure here is very high. Along with foreign workers, local workers are also under mental stress. These incidents are worrying us.”

Rosatom authorities have not yet made any official statement on the matter, but they have assured cooperation in the police investigation. Experts believe that strengthening mental health services, improving the working environment, and increasing safety supervision are essential to prevent this series of deaths in Rooppur.

Local politicians have demanded that the government ensure the transparency and safety of the project. Concerned circles at home and abroad are keeping an eye on whether any new information emerges from the investigation into the incident.
