The body of an Awami League leader named Yunus Al Murshed (48) was recovered from Mirzapur, Tangail. Both of his eyes were gouged out.
Locals recovered his body from the Lauhajang River near his house on Friday night, October 30th.
The deceased Murshed was the president of Ward No. 9 Awami League of Mirzapur Municipality. He was the son of Amir Hossain of Kantalia village of the upazila.
On Saturday morning, October 31, Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the recovery of the body.
According to local sources, Murshed regularly used to fish with a net in the Louhjang River near his house. Like every day, he went to the river ghat to fish on Friday afternoon. When he did not return home even after evening, his family members went to the river ghat to search for him. At one point, they saw Murshed’s body floating in the river. Later, the body was recovered with the help of locals.
Local resident Azibar Hossain said that it is not necessary to go into the water to catch fish with a net. Many people saw Murshed fishing in the river shortly before dusk.
He also said that after the body was recovered, the murshed’s two eyes and one ear were found to be severely damaged.
Former Mirzapur Municipality councilor Afzalur Rahman Chanu said, “Murshed was a skilled swimmer. It is incomprehensible that he died by drowning in the shallow water.”
Meanwhile, the damage to the body’s eyes and ears has raised many questions among locals. There is a mystery surrounding how he died. Many believe it was a planned murder.
In this regard, Mirzapur Police Station OC Abdullah Al Mamun said, “No complaint has been received in this incident so far. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.”
