Many questions are coming to the fore after the mysterious death of former Bangladesh Air Force Flight Lieutenant KM Tahsif Sauri alias Tausif. Although there are plans to investigate the possibility of murder after his body was recovered from the Turag River, his movements before death, and the reasons behind the incident, a large part of the discussion is devoted to the statements of his friend and prime suspect in the case, Ahmed Shahriar Reza Deep. Sometimes about a drug spot, sometimes going to a bar, and sometimes about being chased by people wearing clothes – Deep’s different statements from time to time have become the main topic of discussion in the incident. This also raises the question of whether the real mystery of Tausif’s death and some important aspects of his life are being hidden.
Tausif’s identity is not limited to being a former Air Force officer or a person who died mysteriously. Recently, he has also spoken about various internal issues of the Air Force in several podcasts. The importance of his statements about his experience within the force, various incidents and information he knows, and whether they are in any way related to the incident of death – these issues also deserve investigation. However, in the discussions that have come to light so far, his statements about where he went with Deep on the night of the incident, why he went to the drug spot, and how the incident of jumping into the river have gained more importance than these statements.
It is certainly important to verify Deep’s statement for the sake of the investigation. But there is a question as to how far the investigation into the real cause behind Tausif’s death will progress if we are only concerned with the inconsistencies in his statement. In particular, the investigation needs to take into account the events that occurred before and after Tausif’s death, as well as his recent activities, statements made in podcasts, and information released about the internal affairs of the Air Force.
Discussion is stuck on Deep’s statement
The night Tausif went missing, he went out with Deep for the last time on his motorcycle. After that, there was no trace of him. However, even after Tausif did not return home, Deep did not inform his family about anything. It is alleged that when family members tried to contact him, he gave different information at different times. At one stage, his change of location and hiding in the Mohammadpur area also increased the suspicion of investigators.
There are also inconsistencies in Deep’s statement about the reason for going to the Mazar slum area of Tongi on the night of the incident. The area is known as a spot for drug trafficking and consumption. As a result, the issue of taking Tausif there has come to the fore. But why did he go there at midnight, who was he supposed to meet, or whether there was any other purpose behind going there – the full answer to these questions is still not clear.
Deep claims that some people in clothes chased them in the area. At one point, he hid behind the boundary pillar and jumped into the Tausif River. But if Tausif had jumped into the river in front of his eyes, the answer to the question of why the police, fire service or family were not immediately informed is also important. After the incident, the motorcycle was found abandoned in the area. Sources involved in the investigation also said that there were inconsistencies in Deep’s statement regarding the location of Tausif’s mobile phone.
How important is the cause of death?
The most important question in the case of Tausif’s death should be how he died and who was behind it. Did he fall into the river, or was he murdered and his body thrown into the river? A comprehensive analysis of the injury marks on his body, the circumstances before and after his death, evidence at the scene, and the contact information of the people involved—all of these can provide an idea of the real cause of death.
At the same time, there is no room for ignoring Tausif’s recent activities. It is known that he was sent on compulsory retirement due to his involvement in a controversial video on August 5. Apart from this, his recent statements on some podcasts about the internal affairs of the Air Force also deserve a new discussion. It is necessary to investigate what information he revealed in these statements, whether there was any conflict or pressure over them, or whether there is any connection with his death. However, there is no room for assuming these things as the cause of death or the motive for the murder right now.
Deep is on remand, what questions will be answered?
The court has granted Deep a four-day remand in a case filed on charges of concealing information and murder. The PBI and the police are trying to uncover the real mystery of the incident by verifying the inconsistencies in his statement. However, if the scope of the investigation is limited to Deep’s statement, the drug spot or their travel on the night of the incident, important questions may remain unanswered.
It is also important to investigate what information Tausif disclosed before his death, who he was in contact with, the context of his statements on internal matters of the Air Force, and whether anyone had a conflict with him before his death.
The inconsistency in Deep’s statement may be an important clue for the investigation. But that clue should not become the destination of the entire investigation. Because, the most important thing now is to get reliable answers to the question of how and why Tausif died, not the story of going to a drug spot or the chase.
