Bangladesh-Linked Militant Connections Once Again in Discussion in International Terrorism Monitoring

Bangladesh’s name has once again come up in international terrorism monitoring after India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out raids in a militant conspiracy case against “Imam Mahmuder Kafila” (IMK), an offshoot of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). The South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP), a platform that publishes updates on terrorist activities in South Asia, reported the raids today, Tuesday (29 September).

The NIA is conducting searches at a total of 16 locations in Assam, West Bengal and Kerala. Of these, 10 are in Assam, five in West Bengal and one in Kerala. SATP cited a report by Asianet News as the source of this information.

JMB links in the investigation against 11 people

Three months ago, the NIA had filed a chargesheet against 11 people in this case. In the chargesheet submitted to the NIA Special Court in Guwahati, charges were brought under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.

The NIA’s investigation found that the IMK is a form of the JMB itself. The accused were active in the conspiracy to spread the organisation’s militant ideology in West Bengal and in north-eastern India, including Assam and Tripura. The conspiracy included promoting an extremist agenda, luring vulnerable youths into extremism, and expanding the organisation’s network in India.

Why is Bangladesh’s name in the discussion?

The JMB is a Bangladesh-based militant organisation. As the activities of its offshoot or shadow organisation have come under investigation in a neighbouring country, discussion about the organisation’s cross-border network has resurfaced. The raids are being carried out in Assam and West Bengal, which border Bangladesh, and Tripura has also been named as a target for spreading the organisation’s ideology.
