A case has been filed against 50 people from the party’s affiliates, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, for allegedly attacking, vandalizing and setting fire to the BNP office in Lalmai Upazila of Comilla. Another 200 to 250 people have been named as defendants in the case as anonymous names.

The case was filed by Mohammad Ali Miyaji, general secretary of Bagmara South Union BNP in Lalmai Upazila, at the Comilla Law and Order Disturbance (Speedy Trial) Court on Monday (October 5). Senior Judicial Magistrate Abida Sultana Moli of the court took cognizance of the complaint and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct a proper investigation into the incident.

According to the case report, on the afternoon of September 30, after a program under the banner of the Lalmai Upazila Jubo Dal, the accused blocked the road and created chaos with domestic weapons. At one stage, they broke the lock of the BNP office, entered inside, vandalized the furniture, and took out posters, banners and pictures of top leaders from the office and set them on fire. The plaintiff claims that about 5 lakh taka of damage was caused.

The list of accused in this case includes Lalmai Upazila Jubo Dal senior joint convener Shah Alam, joint convener Habibur Rahman Majumder, Dr. Mohin Uddin, and top local leaders of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal. The plaintiff’s lawyer Omar Faruk said that the accused have been identified and the complaint has been submitted to the court after verifying the testimonies of eyewitnesses and CCTV footage.

However, claiming that all the allegations are baseless, Lalmai Upazila Jubo Dal convener Jaber Ahmed Jabed said, “A peaceful program was held that day in the presence of the police. We do not know who attacked the office. This case has been filed mainly for political revenge and to humiliate the organization.”

The exact truth of the incident and who is actually behind this violence will become clear after the PBI submits its investigation report.
