Former UP member kidnapped from tea shop in Teknaf: Terrorists hacked and injured him, leaving him behind

Organized terrorist and drug trafficking gangs have become active again in Teknaf, a border area of ​​Cox’s Bazar. In a sensational incident, Jamal Uddin (40), a former member of Ward No. 5 of Hnila Union Parishad (UP) in the upazila, was taken from a shop in a public market and hacked to death, causing serious injuries.

The incident took place at around 9 pm on Monday, July 27, in the upazila’s busiest market, Hnila. The entire area is in a state of panic and chaos due to this act of terror.

Brutal description of being picked up from a tea shop

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, former UP member Jamal Uddin was sitting in a tea shop in Hnila Bazar on Monday night. Around 9 pm, an armed group of 5 to 7 people wearing masks attacked him. They were armed with pistols, bullets, and sharp country-made weapons. They took the shopkeeper and the people present hostage at gunpoint and forcibly took Jamal Uddin to a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw. During the abduction, they fired several rounds of blank bullets to create panic.

Later, he was taken to an unknown place and severely injured by slashing his knees with sharp weapons. The attackers left him bleeding and dying in the Hnila Dargah area and fled. Later, locals rescued him and took him to the hospital for treatment.

Locals strongly allege that members of an organized terrorist and drug gang active in the hills adjacent to Hnila and the nearby Rohingya border area are behind this brutal attack. It is believed that the attack may have been carried out to protest their misdeeds on the border or as a result of some local dispute.

Police statement and legal action

​Accepting the truth of the incident, Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said, “We have heard about the beating of former UP member Jamal Uddin in Hnila. An investigation has already been launched to find out who was involved in the incident. Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is received from the victim or his family.”

However, the incident of a former public representative being dragged from the market and hacked to death has raised serious concerns about the safety of local people. Concerned groups have demanded increased patrols by joint forces in Hnila and surrounding areas.
