Four members of the same family tragically died after being buried under a landslide in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet.

The incident occurred around 2:00 AM on Saturday, May 31, in Bakhtiarghat area of Lakshanaband Union No. 7 in the upazila. The bereaved family is now in mourning.

Due to adverse weather conditions caused by natural disasters, rescue operations were delayed by nearly four hours.

On Sunday morning, June 1, around 7:00 AM, Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel, with the help of locals, recovered the bodies of all four victims from the site.

One of the deceased has been identified as Riaz Uddin (45). The other three victims include his wife, one son, and one daughter. The heartbreaking incident was confirmed by Lakshanaband Union Parishad Chairman Khalkur Rahman.

He stated, “Suddenly, a hillside collapsed onto a house around 2:00 AM. Although locals rushed to the scene immediately, rescue efforts were impossible due to the darkness, heavy rain, and stormy weather. Fire Service and police were informed promptly, but a large tree fell on the road in Rakhalganj area of Golapganj, preventing them from reaching the site on time.”

He added, “The Dhakadakshin road was also submerged, making alternative routes inaccessible. Finally, after 6:00 AM, the Fire Service arrived and began rescue operations, recovering all four bodies with local assistance.”

Chairman Khalkur Rahman mentioned that he initially started rescue efforts with local residents but had to evacuate everyone to safety when a second landslide occurred from the same hill.

He further said, “Fearing another landslide on a neighboring house, I evacuated the people and livestock from there. After that, we waited for the Fire Service to arrive.”
