Government hands over country’s gas supply sector to US company for 13 years

The country is facing a severe gas crisis. To alleviate the crisis, the BNP government has entrusted the responsibility of supplying gas to an American company. There is a lot of criticism about this.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given in-principle approval to the proposal to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from US company Gunvar USA LLC on a short- and long-term basis through a G2G (Government-to-Government) arrangement.

The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs held at the Secretariat on Tuesday, July 28, under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Petrobangla will raise and implement the proposal in the Energy and Mineral Resources Department.

According to the meeting sources, Bangladesh is currently importing LNG under a total of 7 agreements with 5 companies from Qatar, Oman, the United States and Saudi Arabia on a G2G basis.

Initiatives have been taken to import additional LNG under short-term contracts as well as long-term contracts to meet the country’s existing and growing gas demand and ensure uninterrupted gas supply.

The BNP government has ensured that the bulk of the supply will be provided by the United States.

As part of the agreement, Gunvar USA LLC has proposed to supply six LNG cargoes per year for a period of 13 years from 2026 to 2039. This proposal has been given in-principle approval for processing under the G2G agreement.
