Imam Arrested for Allegedly Having Sex With Child’s Mother During Religious Lessons, Blackmailing Her With Intimate Video

An imam of a mosque in Tongibari, Munshiganj, has been accused of having sexual relations with the mother of a child while teaching him religious lessons.

The district detective police (DB) has arrested the imam, Noor Alam Sheikh (32), on charges of secretly recording an intimate video with the housewife and blackmailing her by threatening to spread it.

He was arrested from a madrasa in Srinagar Upazila at around 8:30 pm on Sunday, November 1. The police also seized the mobile phone he was using. Evidence was found there.

Nur Alam Sheikh, a resident of Teligati village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila, served as an imam at a Jama Masjid in Tongibari upazila for about 18 months. He also used to visit a local 6-year-old child’s home to give religious education.

A press release from the Munshiganj District Police Media Cell said that at some point, Nur Alam developed a relationship with the child’s mother. According to the allegations, during that relationship, he secretly recorded videos of their intimate moments.

When the matter came to light about a month ago, the mosque committee relieved Nur Alam of his duties as imam and asked him to leave the area. Since then, it is alleged that he has been pressuring the housewife to meet him by threatening her in various ways.

At one point, he sent an offensive video of himself online to a member of the woman’s family, and threatened to spread the video on social media if she did not meet him, police allege.

According to the police, after receiving information in this regard, a DB team started the operation at around 4 pm on Sunday under the direction of Superintendent of Police Md. Menhazul Alam PPM and under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Md. Kamran Hossain.

Noor Alam was arrested at around 8:30 pm in a drive led by Police Inspector Arjun Kumar Das, Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam Azad BPM and Sub-Inspector (OC) Rezaul Kazi.

The district police said that during the initial interrogation, Nur Alam admitted to the allegations. He is married and has four children. The process of filing a regular case against him in this incident is underway at Tongibari Police Station.
