Iran Reeling Under Sanctions Pressure as President Pezeshkian Acknowledges Harsh Reality

Iranian public life has been plunged into a deep crisis as the United States imposes new economic sanctions. President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly acknowledged that there are many problems in society and that the government is trying to alleviate them as much as possible. He made the remarks in a speech broadcast on state television on Sunday.

In response to the US announcement last week that it aims to ensure the “collapse” of the Iranian regime through a new sanctions program, which comes nearly six months after the US-Iran war began, Pezeshkian said that Iran is now facing a full-scale war on three fronts – economic, military and security – under US President Donald Trump.

He alleged that Trump himself is claiming that he is imposing the most severe and crippling sanctions on Iran.

In this situation, there is a fear of further increase in the prices of daily necessities in markets like Tehran’s Grand Bazaar. The purchasing power of the common people is already decreasing due to inflation and currency exchange rate instability in the country.

A movement that began late last year over rising living costs has since morphed into widespread anti-government protests. Iranian authorities say more than 3,000 people have been killed in the unrest, and they have blamed the United States and Israel for the violence.

However, various foreign-based human rights organizations claim that the authorities carried out indiscriminate repression, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people.

In his address to the people on Sunday, Pezeshkian said that the government is sincerely trying to address inflation, the cost of living crisis, and unemployment so that ordinary people can live in the future with dignity and respect.

Notably, since the start of the war on February 28, 3,636 deaths have been reported in Iran, of which approximately 2,100 are civilians.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant will hold a press conference on Monday to provide a fuller account of the new sanctions, which are expected to detail the new economic measures imposed on Iran.
