A group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) students have burnt an effigy of Delwar Hossain Sayedee, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity in 1971, in protest against Jamaat-e-Islami’s obstruction of the burial of the body of freedom fighter Manik Pashari.

They held a protest program in the Battala area of the university at around 8:30 pm on Monday (October 26).

There have been no reports of any protests yet at Dhaka University, historically the cradle of the country’s movement and struggle, where the most barbaric massacre took place during the Liberation War.

According to eyewitnesses, an effigy of war criminal Sayeedi was burnt in the program, which was attended by 10 to 12 students. The effigy had inscriptions like ‘Pakistan’s agent’ and ‘War criminal Deilya Razakar’ written on it.

In addition to the allegations of obstructing the burial of the body of the heroic freedom fighter Manik Pashari from the program, the students also strongly criticized the fact that he was not given the proper state honors or guard of honor.

After the effigy was cremated, the students held a protest rally. It is learnt that they demanded that the dignity of the freedom fighter be protected and proper arrangements be made for his burial and state honors.

However, the authorities concerned and Jamaat-e-Islami have not been able to comment on the allegations of obstructing the burial of Manik Pashari and not providing a guard of honor. However, it is reported that Masud Saeedi, the third son of war criminal Saeedi, is spreading misinformation about Manik Pashari not having fought in the liberation war.
