Mother, Sister-in-Law and 8-Month-Old Nephew Hacked and Beaten to Death in Cumilla

A mother and her 8-month-old niece were tragically killed in a domestic violence incident in Debidwar, Comilla. The accused youth has been identified as Emon (24). The child’s mother, Rabeya Begum, was seriously injured while trying to stop the incident. Police have arrested the accused and taken him into police custody.

The incident took place at around 8:30 am today, Monday, September 21, at the house of Mostafa Master in Dakshin Para, Barashalghar village of the upazila.

The deceased were Emon’s mother Peyara Begum and her eight-month-old niece Israt Jahan.

According to local sources, around 8:30 am, Emon suddenly got agitated and started attacking his mother Peyara Begum with a sharp knife. When Emon’s sister-in-law Rabeya Begum came forward to stop the incident, she was also attacked and injured.

At one point, the accused youth snatched his eight-month-old niece Israt from his lap and threw her to the ground.

Hearing the screams, neighbors came forward and rescued the injured and took them to the Debidwar Upazila Health Complex. The doctor on duty declared Peyara Begum and child Israt dead. Rabeya Begum is undergoing treatment in critical condition.

Immediately after the incident, the agitated local crowd arrested Emon and locked him in a nearby room. Upon receiving the information, the police quickly reached the spot and arrested him and took him into custody.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Debidwar Police Station Md. Moniruzzaman said that the accused youth is in police custody and interrogation is underway to find out the root cause of the incident.

Initially, it was learned that Emon had been mentally or physically ill for a long time. Preparations are underway to send the bodies to the Comilla Medical College morgue for autopsy.
