Neymar da Silva Jr. has ended his international career after a miserable experience at the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Santos forward joined Brazil’s World Cup squad without full fitness, playing only a handful of matches in total. His only goal of the tournament was a penalty against Norway in the last 16.
Norway defeated the Seleção 2-1 in the last 16 stage, sending Brazil to the field with the pain of being trophyless in yet another World Cup since 2002.
When asked at one point in the press conference whether he would be seen at the 2030 World Cup, Neymar replied quite simply, “My exciting journey with the national team has come to an end. I made history there, and I am very happy about it.”
Quoting ‘Football Mercato’, he added, ‘I have had to go through a lot of experiences. I have always given my best and fought for the jersey, but I think it is time to stop.’
The 34-year-old star footballer’s current contract with Santos will expire at the end of 2026. He will then make his next decision.
Neymar retired as the all-time top scorer for the Brazilian national team, scoring 80 goals in 130 matches for the Seleção in four World Cups.
