The Golden Boot race heats up: Mbappé draws level with Messi

The race for the Golden Boot has taken a thrilling turn as Kylian Mbappe overtook Lionel Messi in the race for the World Cup’s top scorer. The two superstars are now tied on the same number of goals, bringing the battle for the tournament’s top scorer to a thrilling conclusion.

France relied on a second-half penalty from Mbappe to break down Paraguay’s stubborn defence in a tough last-16 match on Saturday, securing a quarter-final clash with Morocco with a 1-0 victory.

The Paraguayan attempt to distract the French stars for three-quarters of the match in front of 68,324 spectators in the scorching Philadelphia heat was quite successful.

France were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after a video review found Paraguay’s Diego Gomez fouled them, and Mbappe coolly slotted home. It was his 19th goal in his 19th World Cup appearance, leaving him just one behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who scored his 20th World Cup goal in Argentina’s 3-2 win over Cape Verde on Friday.

This goal brings Mbappe’s goal tally in the current tournament to seven, putting him next to Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

After the match, France coach Didier Deschamps praised his captain’s leadership and commitment to the team.

“He has shown the right mentality from the start and is giving his all for the team. He is an extraordinary player, and when he speaks, he speaks on behalf of the whole team,” Deschamps said.

Mbappe also became the first player to score at least three goals in the knockout stages of three different World Cups.

The match was tense, with several physical fouls being aimed at the French forward. Tensions flared in the first half when a minor scuffle broke out between players from both teams after Paraguay’s Andres Cubas fouled Mbappe. Later, Matias Galarza elbowed the French star during another challenge.

After the final whistle, Mbappe appeared to avoid Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gil’s attempted handshake, which prompted Gil to throw the ball towards the France captain.

Reacting to such physical football, Mbappe said that France was prepared for Paraguay’s tactics and responded appropriately to their aggression.

The victory not only sent France into the quarter-finals but also kept Mbappe well in the race for the Golden Boot and the record for the highest World Cup goal of all time.

He is followed by Norway’s Erling Haaland and England’s Harry Kane on five goals. If players are tied on goals, FIFA will first consider assists and then the shortest playing time to determine the award. Mbappe currently has a 2-0 lead over Messi in assists.
