Over a hundred people, led by employees of Kortoya Courier Service, attacked the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) office with sticks, leaving three canteen staff seriously injured. Shahbagh Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident.

The attack occurred around 11:30 AM on Friday, March 28, at the DRU office in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.

The injured – DRU canteen staff Babul, Zahir, and Rabiul – were rescued and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

DRU President Abu Saleh Aqon said, “Abdur Rahman, a Kortoya Courier Service employee, led over 100 people armed with sticks to attack our staff. Senior journalists who tried to intervene were also assaulted.”

Explaining the reason behind the attack, he said, “There was a system here for journalists to purchase TCB products using tokens. One token somehow reached a Kortoya employee who made 50 copies to illegally collect TCB goods.”

“Our staff Babul caught them red-handed. We then barred them from collecting further supplies. In anger, they first beat Babul near Kortoya’s Paltan office today. When we protested, they attacked the DRU office with a large group,” Aqon added.

A case has been filed with Shahbagh Police Station regarding the incident, according to the DRU President.

Shahbagh Police Station OC Khalid Mansur confirmed that a case has been filed over the attack on DRU staff and two people have been arrested. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other accused persons.
