A young man named Wahiduzzaman Shamim (38) was beaten to death in two rounds in Debhata, Satkhira, on charges of hurting religious sentiments. He was taken to the upazila health center with serious injuries in the first round of beatings, where he was beaten a second time while undergoing treatment.
He died while undergoing treatment after being taken to Satkhira Medical College Hospital under police guard.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, October 13th.
The deceased was Shamim, son of Shamsul Rahman Sana of Subornabad village in Debhata upazila.
According to local sources, tension arose in the area after some audio conversations of Shamim were leaked. Locals claimed that the audios insulted Allah, the Prophet, and the Companions.
In this incident, on the night of Monday, October 12, some local people went to Shamim’s house. It is said that at that time he tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. Later, his brothers rescued him and admitted him to the chamber of Sabur Doctor in Kuliya area.
Tension spread in Parulia and Kulia areas on Tuesday evening over the incident. At one stage, agitated people went to the Kulia chamber and beat Shamim. Later, when he was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, a second attack took place there as well.
When Shamim’s physical condition deteriorated around 11pm, he was taken to Satkhira Medical College Hospital under police guard. He died there while undergoing treatment.
Debhata Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) HM Shaheen said that when a mob surrounded Shamim, who was angry over the accusation of religious insult, the police rescued him and first took him to the Upazila Health Complex. Later, some people entered the hospital and beat him up a second time.
When his physical condition deteriorated, he was taken to Satkhira Medical College Hospital under police guard, where doctors declared him dead.
The OC said that legal action is being taken in this incident.
