2026 World Cup: 7 teams confirmed, others still in the race

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to write a new chapter in history. For the first time, 48 teams will compete in the final round, creating an extraordinary moment for football fans worldwide. Host nations United States, Mexico and Canada will participate directly. The remaining 45 teams will secure their spots through qualifiers held across the world.

Among the first teams to confirm their World Cup tickets are Asian powerhouse Japan, Oceania’s New Zealand, another Asian team Iran, and current world champions Argentina.

Japan:
Japan secured their World Cup spot by defeating Bahrain 2-0 on March 20.
They top Group C in Asian qualifiers.
This marks their eighth consecutive World Cup appearance.

New Zealand:
New Zealand qualified by beating New Caledonia 3-0 on March 24.
This will be their third World Cup.

Iran:
Iran confirmed their World Cup place with a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan on March 25.
This will be their fourth consecutive and seventh overall World Cup.

Argentina:
Argentina qualified by defeating Brazil 4-1.
This will be their 19th World Cup.

Forty-one more teams are still battling to secure their spots. Teams from Asia, Africa, South America and Europe are giving their best to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Asia:
Uzbekistan and South Korea are leading, but UAE, Jordan, Iraq, Oman, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia remain in contention.

Africa:
Egypt, South Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Ghana and Tunisia are in strong positions.

South America:
Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay and Colombia are well placed to qualify.

Europe:
Teams are competing across 12 groups for 16 available spots.
