Real Madrid returned to form just before the El Clasico. French superstar Kylian Mbappe scored a brace as Jose Mourinho’s men thrashed Sevilla 4-1, closing the gap on leaders Barcelona to six points.

Real Madrid played attacking football from the start at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. The hosts took the lead in the 30th minute through a spectacular goal from Arda Güler. The Turkish midfielder scored with a stunning shot from outside the box.

Then the Mbappe show began. He scored his first and his team’s second goal in the first half of the match. The French forward, receiving the ball from Jude Bellingham’s backheel, beat the Sevilla defense with a great ‘roulette’ turn and sent the ball into the net. Then, shortly after the break, Mbappe scored his second and his team’s third goal with a ‘Panenka’ shot from the penalty spot. This was his ninth goal in the current La Liga.

Manuel Bueno scored a goal for Sevilla but it was not enough to save them from a heavy defeat. Ivorian winger Yann Diomande, who joined the team in the summer transfer window, scored the fourth goal for Real with a brilliant rocket shot towards the end of the match.

The win moved Real Madrid up to third in the La Liga points table. However, the match has also been the subject of controversy ahead of the first El Clasico of the season to be held at Camp Nou next Sunday. Real’s Arda Güler escaped a red card after elbowing an opponent in the first half. Sevilla coach Luis Garcia Plaza has expressed his anger over the incident. He claims that Real should have played with 10 men from the 25th minute.
However, putting all the controversy behind him, Real boss Jose Mourinho is now focusing on the upcoming El Clasico. This clash between the two best superpowers of Spanish football next Sunday will play a big role in determining the fate of the table.
