U.S. Ambassador in India Eric Garcetti Expresses Concern Over Religious Minority Rights in Bangladesh

NEW DELHI — U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti has expressed concern over discrimination and violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. He called on the international community to work together to protect the rights of religious minorities worldwide.

Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Garcetti emphasized, “Religious minorities are crucial to the democracy and peace of the world. We have clearly stated that it is essential to ensure the protection of religious minorities in any country. This is not only a pillar of democracy but also vital for global peace.”

His remarks come in the wake of attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly the Hindu community, which has raised international alarm. Garcetti added, “We are working closely with South Asia, especially Bangladesh and India, to ensure that these communities’ voices are never left out. We are committed to ensuring that their rights are protected.”

Garcetti also noted that the United States has always worked to safeguard the rights of minorities in South Asia and will continue to do so in the future.

During his visit, Garcetti attended a cultural event at St. Xavier’s College in Jharkhand, where he enjoyed a Santali folk dance performance. Reflecting on Jharkhand’s traditions and its people’s relationship with the land, he said, “Jharkhand is the heart of the Indian subcontinent, where there is a deep connection between people and the land. The Santali people and their traditions are incredibly important.”

Comparing Indian and American Indigenous cultures, Garcetti highlighted the shared values of respect for nature and environmental conservation, noting, “Both cultures share a common outlook on the importance of these lessons, which the world today needs more than ever.”

This was Garcetti’s first visit to Jharkhand, and he praised the region’s culture and heritage.
