After Mob Loot and Vandalism at Awami League Leader’s Former Daughter-in-Law’s House, 3 Arrested Following Criticism

A major controversy erupted after a mob tried to loot, vandalize, and conduct an illegal search at the Gulshan home of Tanveer Imam, the former son-in-law of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political advisor HT Imam. The police arrested three individuals following widespread criticism and condemnation.

The incident unfolded when a rumor spread on social media claiming that HT Imam’s house, now occupied by Tanveer Imam’s ex-wife, housed large sums of money, illegal arms, and other contraband. The rumor led local BNP leaders and members of a social movement to form a mob. They forced their way into the house, where they destroyed furniture, tried to loot, and conducted a search. The event was broadcast live on social media.

At midnight, a group led by Jewel Khondkar, a leader from the BNP’s youth wing, gathered outside the house, claiming that the house contained illicit items hidden by ruling party members. Armed with this misinformation, the mob, including several teenagers, broke into the house. They disrupted and damaged various household items, including wardrobes and bedding. Police were present at the scene but did not intervene.

Jewel Khondkar and others claimed that they had received information about weapons and millions of dollars hidden in the house. However, despite their search, they found nothing. Afterward, the police intervened, and later, army personnel arrived at the scene.

The caretaker of the house clarified that it was not HT Imam’s property but belonged to his son-in-law, Rahman. He also mentioned that Tanveer Imam and his ex-wife divorced many years ago, and Rahman passed away some time ago.

After the incident, three people were arrested—Shakil Khondkar (24), Jewel Khondkar (48), and Shakil Ahmed (28). Shakil Ahmed was previously employed as a caretaker at the house and allegedly incited the crowd by spreading false information about hidden wealth.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement urging the public not to take the law into their own hands and to report criminal activities to the nearest police station. The government has reassured the public that it remains committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of people’s lives and property.
